Fashion is the main visual indicator of personal style. It is the first thing you see when looking at other people because almost everyone wears clothing in public. Purchasing habits have a large impact on how style is developed. There are two main ways that people get clothing: Fast fashion retail and second-hand. This research shows that buying behavior contributes a great deal to personal style, especially in college students. A person with a more definite and individualized style prefers secondhand shopping, which is dictated by a tight budget and sustainability concerns. The increased popularity of secondhand fashion among younger consumers is, in itself, a positive shift away from the damaging practices of fast fashion, which contribute to environmental degradation and labor exploitation.
My research indicates that as students and young adults increasingly prioritize affordability and uniqueness, they are turning more and more to thrift stores, reselling platforms, and sustainable fashion choices to build their wardrobes. This growing movement not only offers an alternative to fast fashion but also fosters a more conscious and creative approach to personal style. Further research could explore how these trends might evolve as younger generations gain more financial independence or examine the broader societal impacts of these purchasing habits in combating fast fashion's environmental footprint. The ultimate takeaway from this research is that it raises awareness of the importance of mindful consumerism, with fashion being both an avenue for self-expression and environmental activism.
